Each and every wedding is unique and special in its own way. From the wedding decorations to the wedding speeches, every celebration is a reflection of the couple's relationship, beliefs and personal style. And good news: even traditional Christian wedding vows can be tweaked a little. Here are some great examples showing how to make your vows meaningful, from the most traditional to the most personal wedding vows.

About Christian wedding vows

Did you know that the traditional wedding vows aren't in the Bible, but are based on biblical principles? This means you are free to interpret those principles and write your own vows. The bible defines marriage as the joining of two into one, according to Genesis 2:24. And according to Mark 10:9, a union must be for life. For two people to be joined, there should be love, honour, union and submission.

There are the traditional wedding vows we've all heard and then there are personal and romantic wedding vows that have been written by the couple or existing vows that have been edited. They all still count as Christian wedding vows if they embody Christian principles. But you might want to steer clear of funny wedding vows if you're planning a solemn religious ceremony.

The first example below is the commonly used traditional Christian wedding vows. The second takes a note from the traditional vows and adds on to them. And the third example is completely invented, but is still acceptable for a Christian wedding. You can feel free to write your own personalised wedding vows if there is something specific you'd like to express. As you can see, there are slight differences between the wedding vows for him and her; you don't need to recite the same vows.

Traditional Christian vows

I, (Name), take you, (Name), to be my wife/husband, to have and to hold from this day forward, for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish, till death us do part, according to God's holy law, in the presence of God I make this vow.

Edited and lengthened Christian vows

Groom:

I, (Name), in faith, honesty and love, take you, (Name), to be my wedded wife,
To share with you God's plan for our lives together united in Christ.
And with God's help, to strengthen and guide me I will be a strong spiritual leader for us in our life,
For better, for worse, in sickness and in health, in joys and in sorrows, until death do we part.
I give you all that I have myself and my love.
All these things I pledge to thee in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.
With this ring I seal my vow of love to you, (Name) and pray I may fulfill God's place in our home,
In the Name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

Bride:

I, (Name), in faith, honesty and love, take you, (Name), to be my wedded husband,
To share with you God's plan for our lives together united in Christ.
And with God's help, to strengthen and guide me I will be your supportive wife,
For better, for worse, in sickness and in health, in joys and in sorrows, until death do we part.
I give you all that I have myself and my love.
All these things I pledge to thee in the Name of our Lord Jesus Christ.
With this ring I seal my vow of love to you, (Name) and pray I may fulfill God's place in our home,
In the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

Groom:

I am reminded of James 1:17 where it says that every good and perfect gift comes from above.
(Name), you are truly a Gift from God and I promise to spend the rest of my life treating you as such.
I will cherish you always and never take you for granted.
I will lead you and guide you as Christ leads me.
I will follow His teachings and obey His commands.
I will lead by example, with patience, and with understanding.
I will be slow to anger, and quick to listen.
I will be a strong spiritual leader in our home through good times and bad, in joy and in sorrow.
I will love you and be faithful to you alone from this day forward until God calls us home.
This is my solemn pledge to you and to God.
Please accept this ring as a symbol of our covenant and my undying love for you.

Bride:

(Name), in the presence of God, our family and friends, I take you today as my husband.
You are an answer to my prayers and I will spend the rest of my life thanking God for loving me enough to send me His very best.
I promise to be for you the helpmate God intended from the beginning.
I will honour you as my spiritual head. I will follow you as you follow Christ.
I will cover you in prayer.
I will work alongside you in support of your God-given vision for our family.
I will speak words of kindness and not criticism.
I will love you and be faithful to you alone from this day forward until God calls us home.
This is my solemn pledge to you and to God.
Please accept this ring as a symbol of our covenant and my undying love for you.
