After Charles I surrendered during the Civil War, he was taken to Kelham Hall. Charles was subsequently put on trial and executed for treason in London. The original building was destroyed by fire in 1857 and its owner, Mr Manners-Sutton hired George Gilbert Scott (who was the architect of the Albert Memorial and St Pancras Station) to design the new Kelham Hall.
