It is believed that a church has stood there since Saxon times and there is evidence of a mediaeval building dating back to around 1130. The church changed much when it was restored in 1856 with its impressive tower. The house itself has associations with parliamentarians, nobility and royalty and is one of the last examples of Palladian architecture remaining. Today, the House is mainly used as an entertainment venue which is not so far removed from the former idea of their ancestor, George Lyttelton.
